Stress-Free Procedures with Dr. Barras
For some patients, visiting the dentist is a nerve-wracking experience. This is called dental anxiety, and it prevents up to 20% of people from seeking the oral health care they need.
That’s why we offer three forms of sedation to help you relax in the dental chair and maintain a healthy smile.
Nitrous Oxide
The most common form of dental sedation is nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas. It’s administered through a small mask that we place over your nose, and it begins to take effect the moment you breathe it in.
You’ll remain conscious during your treatment, but you’ll experience a wave of euphoria that will help to ease your anxiety and keep you comfortable. The effects can also be reversed immediately, so you can drive yourself home from your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Though Dr. Barras doesn’t perform IV sedation himself, we have a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) on call to accommodate patients who prefer this option.
Our anesthetist will administer a liquid sedative directly into your bloodstream, putting you in a state of deep relaxation within seconds. They’ll also carefully monitor your vital signs throughout treatment to ensure your safety.
Like the other methods, you won’t lose consciousness, though you likely won’t remember your procedure later. The effects of IV sedation can linger for an hour or two after treatment, so make sure you plan for a responsible adult to drive you home.
